Golden Silverpoint Drawing Ground

Jan van Eyck, Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, Raphael, Cennino Cennini, J.A.D. Ingres and Rembrandt van Rijn all used Silverpoint to draw with. Fine Silver placed in a pen can be used on chalky gesso or stone paper. Monks used Silverpoint on Vellum in the Medaeval period to trace out thier Manuscripts. Silver leaves a fine line that oxidises to a warm brown over months depending on the air quality it is exposed to. This medium is direct and articulate leaving a fine mark that can be built upon with the layering of line work. Golden’s Silverpoint Ground is made with Zinc White instead of the shinier Titanium White pigment to catch the delicate silver mark. A great alternative to our omnipotent Graphite.
